Our History

Hospice of Havasu owes its existence to the hard work and dedication of the Hospice Development Board. In 1982, Reverend Barrie Gray, the Board's Chairman, and other board members visited hospices throughout the United States, gathering the information that was needed to build a foundation for hospice services in Lake Havasu City. Our agency's incorporation followed on July 19, 1982.

Initially licensed as a home health agency (hospice licensure wouldn't become available for 6 more years), Hospice of Havasu's first patient was accepted in November 1983. In 1984, during our first full year of operation, Hospice of Havasu admitted a total of 10 patients. After receiving our hospice license in November 1989, followed by Medicare Hospice Certification in December 1997, Hospice of Havasu admitted a total of 128 patients in 1998. The total number of admissions has grown steadily each year, reaching 459 in 2010.

Hospice of Havasu employs a professional staff of nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, social workers, chaplains, bereavement counselors and a team of administrative support staff. Their work is supplemented by a large and active volunteer corps. Currently, more than 150 dedicated volunteers give their time and talent in support of Hospice of Havasu's 90+ full and part-time paid employees. Recruitment of new volunteers and new employees is continuous. We accept applications at any time.
