Hospice of Havasu is a patient-centered team of volunteers and professionals, serving the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the incurably ill in our communities and their family and friends.
Hospice of Havasu owes its existence to the hard work and dedication of the Hospice Development Board. In 1982, Reverend Barrie Gray, the Board's Chairman, and other board members visited hospices throughout the United States, gathering the information that was needed to build a foundation for hospice services in Lake Havasu City. Our agency's incorporation followed on July 19, 1982.
Initially licensed as a home health agency (hospice licensure wouldn't become available for 6 more years), Hospice of Havasu's first patient was accepted in November 1983. In 1984, during our first full year of operation, Hospice of Havasu admitted a total of 10 patients. After receiving our hospice license in November 1989, followed by Medicare Hospice Certification in December 1997, Hospice of Havasu admitted a total of 128 patients in 1998. The total number of admissions has grown steadily each year, reaching 333 in 2005. By early November 2006, our admissions already number 374 patients.
Hospice of Havasu employs a professional staff of nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, social workers, chaplains, bereavement counselors and a team of administrative support staff. Their work is supplemented by a large and active volunteer corps. Our first Hospice of Havasu volunteer training course was taught by Ruth Reichel, producing our first volunteer graduates in May 1983. Currently, over 75 dedicated volunteers give their time and talent in support of Hospice of Havasu's 83 full and part-time paid employees. Recruitment of new volunteers and new employees is continuous. We accept applications at any time.
